Full disclosure; Icarus is a founding member of Nightride FM. That small detail certainly does not influence my thoughts, opinions, and what I am about to say about this song.
I like "Thieves" a lot. It's is a charming tune and tells the classic story of Bonnie and Clyde with a fresh synthwave lens. Its vocal delivery by both Megan McDuffy and Icarus is on point and overall, the song is rich with solid production value.
The opening lines grab the listener from the first very first lyric. Sung by Megan McDuffee, she sets the scene of an accomplice nervously sitting in a diner and this may just be the best opening line in the history of opening lines. The stage is set with sparks of anticipation.
What I like most about this song is the solid refrain. "Like thieves, we'll steal each other's hearts There's no turning back Driving through the warm breeze." It's the perfect Bonnie and Clyde scenario and paints a wonderful picture of two thieves cruising on into the sunset with a fat stack of cash. Icarus delivers this refrain with a strong raspy voice that totally hits the mark for me.
Speaking of vocal delivery, I would like to call attention to the blending harmonies found in "Thieves." Duets can be tricky, especially when there is a mix of vocalized and organic singing styles but I like the way they pulled it off. With "Thieves", Icarus delivers vocals with a lot less processing than normal. This allows for a nice contrast with Megans softer vocal delivery.
Every heist has a crew that attempts to pull it off. In this heist story composition, everyone plays a vital role. Megan provides the soft and unassuming vocals that lure the listener in. Icarus does the dirty work and delivers the hook on the refrain. This leaves the most important job of them all to Moonraccoon, the getaway driver.
