With the oversaturation of synthwave and cyberpunk artists in 2020, it is harder than ever to create music that both accurately represents the genre AND innovates at the same time. For the Manchester UK based darksynth producer however, this seems like the status quo. Sporting his 7th studio album in the span of just 3 years, DEADLIFE releases yet another great effort that showcases his solid production chops, unmistakable style and deeply authentic emotional inspirations.
Rhythm and Melody
One of the biggest things that sets DEADLIFE apart from most synthwave producers is his constant use of interesting rhythms and melodies. This bi-timbral approach makes every single one of his tracks interesting to listen to and keeps the momentum going even when the drums cut out or the tempo slows down. Syncopated rhythms that echo from his past as a drummer keep even a one note bass groove interesting. Seamlessly blending major and minor melodies on the same track and throughout the album provides immense depth and take the listener on a journey that starts as an introverted experience and culminates in a larger than life spectacle.
The Art of Progress
Another one of DEADLIFE's trademark techniques is not conforming to standard songwriting tropes. This is displayed constantly throughout the album but shines on tracks like Tomorrow's Children, and Downpour. Tracks like these focus on the journey and seamlessly change feel and distraction without making the listener feel as if the track has ended abruptly or has awkwardly changed direction.
Heavy, uplifting, dark, energetic, progressive are all accurate words describing CITY OF ETERNAL RAIN. But don't take my word on it. Listen for yourselves!
